Why is my AC running but not cooling?
Your air conditioning unit is something that you probably take for granted until it stops working. This is usually at the most awkward time.
You’ll probably need to contact your local specialist in Air conditioning Sydney. However, before they arrive it is a good idea to understand the basic concepts and parts to establish what may have gone wrong when your AC is running but not cooling.
Thermostat Issue
The first step is to check your thermostat setting. You may find that it is set to “on”, instead of auto. An air conditioner that is on will blow air in the same way as a fan, but this doesn’t mean that the air is being cooled. Your thermostat must say auto; this will make the unit adjust the temperature of the room to the setting of your thermostat.
Of course, if your thermostat is defective being in the auto position won’t help.
Air Filter Issue
The next step is to take a look at your air filter. If you don’t clean them regularly then the air filter will quickly get dirty. This will prevent your unit from having an adequate airflow. In short, the unit will struggle to get your home cool enough as it can’t circulate a large enough volume of air.
Check The Outside Unit
The unit on the outside of your home takes the heat that the air conditioner pumps out of your house and gets rid of it into the atmosphere. However, if this unit is dirty or has debris stuck inside it the unit won’t be able to function properly; preventing your air conditioning unit from making your home cool enough.
Give it a clean to see if your unit starts working more efficiently and effectively.
Motor Problem
If the condenser fan motor breaks then it won’t be possible for the hot air to be removed from the house; again preventing the air conditioner from cooling your home properly.
Don’t Forget: Anything that stops your unit from working properly will place a strain on the motor which will shorten its lifespan; that’s an extra bill you don’t want.
Low Refrigerant
This is the heart of your air conditioner. You’ll know it’s leaking as there will be a bubbling or hissing sound from the machine. You may also see ice on the refrigerant lines.
This is not something you can fix yourself; a professional will need to fix the leak and then recharge the system for you. If you don’t get it seen to quickly it is possible that the compressor will become sluggish and could be damaged beyond economical repair!
The Compressor
If there are any other funny noises and rumblings from your unit there is a good chance that the compressor has developed a fault. This is the heart of your unit and the most expensive part. You’ll probably find it is easier, and cheaper, to replace your entire air conditioning unit!
Again, get hold of your local professional as soon as possible to assess the damage.
