Thinking of Relocating in 2021? Make sure you have an expat checklist
The thought of moving abroad and relocating to one of your favourite countries may seem like any easy task, but it may surprise you just how many factors there are to consider before you take the leap. Whether you’re looking to move for work, play or retirement, it’s a major life-changing event for expatriates, especially those with families.
The best way to make sure you’ve completed everything in preparation for the big move, is to make a list do you don’t overlook any important details. Here are some of the things you’ll need to have ready.
Paper renewals
This includes everything from your driving licence and passports to insurance and any medical documentation. As soon as the move is confirmed, you’ll need to make sure that everyone who is leaving has a valid passport. If it expires within six months, remember it will need replacing.
Your driving licence will also need to be up-to-date. Sometimes in a new country your driving licence will be accepted by the local government. For other countries they may want you to have an international driving licence, so check before you depart.
Where your medical and insurance are concerned, you’ll need to check what your eligibility is for your new country of residence. As Britain only has a special agreement with a number of countries, you should make all the necessary enquiries before you leave.
If you’re struggling with where you’re relocating to or need to apply for specialist visas and work permits, get in touch with a firm like Withers who can expertly guide you through it all.
Banks matter
Many banks now offer global accounts that are ideal if you’re moving abroad. Ask you bank if they do and get your finances and direct debits moved across as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to get your internet banking set up, as you may not have access to branches where you’re moving to.
Accommodation
One of the most important things is knowing where you’re going to be living when you move to your new country. Do some research beforehand, visit the area if you can a number of times to see what you think and once you’re sure, look into how you’re going to move all your belongings over there.
It’s wise to keep a track of your spends and budget for this, as it can end up costing a substantial amount of money. Getting your research done ahead of your departure date will also help you to avoid any mistakes!
Travel arrangements
This should be done around six weeks before you move. Check and confirm all your travel arrangements from trains and flights, to ferry reservations and couriers for your belongings. If you’re not moving into your new house straight away, remember to check that all of your temporary accommodation or hotel bookings are confirmed too! It’s wise to print everything off and keep it in a wallet or booklet, as well as having digital copies on your phone too.
