Is Fluoridation Really a Good Thing?!

Do you live in a country that produces tap water enriched in fluoride? Since 1940, fluoride has been part of various domestic water supplies around the US. The major reason for this act is to prevent tooth decay at a greater level. But for a few years, this fluoridation has raised many eyebrows.

According to skeptics, potential risks of added fluoride in tap water outweigh its benefits. They think water mixed with fluoride reduces IQ, increases acne, and causes many kidney problems.

Since 2013, more than 74 cities have voted to stop the addition of fluoride in their water. This move has forced the US Public Health Service to curb down the levels of the substance in water supplies. But, some citizens are still unsure if that’s the right thing to do.

Why Is Fluoride Important In Your Water?

According to experts, fluoride is good for us. Here are some ways it may benefit you:

  • Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases among children. But, fluoride in water prevents this problem and reduces the pressure on dental care.
  • Since it is a natural chemical, fluoride consumption has no side effects if used the right way.
  • Studies show this substance can prevent cavities in adults by 25%.
  • Various surgeons and dental associations have supported water fluoridation around the US for its safety.
  • The regular use of fluoride water is one of the best ways to get rid of costly dental fillings now and then.

Is Fluoridation Really a Good Thing?!

While the above claims highlight the importance of fluoride in your water, you can’t deny the arguments against public water fluoridation either.

Why Do People Reject Fluoride In Water?

Here are some of the ways why people hate the addition of fluoride in their drinking water:

  • Increased fluoride exposure often leads to fluorosis in both kids and adults. It is a cosmetic condition that causes tooth enamel to discolor.
  • Fluoride in drinking water means an uncontrollable consumption of it without any control.
  • With the availability of fluoride toothpaste today, this element may be an unnecessary addition to water.
  • According to a report, excess consumption of fluoride may lead to poor cognitive functions in kids.

Is Fluoridation Really a Good Thing?!

To make your own opinion, you need to understand both sides of the story. However, if you think adding fluoride to tap water is a risky substance, installing a water filter in your home is always a good idea. But do these machines remove fluoride? Let’s find out.

Can Water Filters Remove Fluoride?

There are so many different water filters available. Each one follows distinct methods of filtering water producing varying results. To learn more about the best water filters removing fluoride, read the guide below:

Reverse Osmosis Systems

RO systems work effectively against fluoride. They can eliminate 95% of this chemical present in your water. The semipermeable membrane removes all the water contaminants and helps to produce a clean permeate.

RO water filters are super easy to install and use. But, they require vast storage space and continuous maintenance. On the other hand, these systems waste a lot of water which isn’t good for the environment.

Gravity Water Filters

These are far more effective than RO filters when it comes to fluoride elimination. Gravity water systems use ceramic filters to remove fluoride by up to 97%. They are also less costly than RO systems.

But, a gravity water filter may not properly clean the water against other contaminants. Moreover, filtration is slow, so it’s only best for small families.

Water Filter Pitchers

A majority of water filter pitchers use activated carbon to eliminate impurities. While this method is pretty good for purification, it doesn’t remove fluoride from water. But, some pitchers come with separate fluoride filters. If you like a pitcher filter for its design and convenience, get one that also filters fluoride.

Countertop Water Filters

These filters are bulky and take up a lot of space. That said, most countertop water filters are great fluoride eliminators. They can reduce fluoride levels to 95% in your drinking water. Moreover, they are easy to install and perfect for a big family. Before you buy a countertop water filter, though, make sure to go through its design specifications. It is vital to make sure you have enough space to accommodate one.

Whole House Water Filters

Similar to pitchers, most whole house water filters use activated carbon to filter impurities. It means they are usually ineffective against fluoride. This in not the case for whole house water filters using activated alumina. Activated alumina helps remove fluoride. But don’t expect this to be as efficient as an RO or gravity water filter.

Distillation

Distillation is more of a method than a filter, a method that removes fluoride effectively. Regardless of its properties, distillation is slow and doesn’t provide more than two to four liters of water a day. If you have a small family, a distiller may meet your requirement.

Final Thoughts

The dilemma that revolves around fluoride in water is still pretty much unsolved. Some people hail the inclusion of fluoride in domestic water supplies as an achievement. But, many can’t stop fighting against this decision.

It all comes down to what and whom you believe. If you don’t want fluoride in your water, wait no more to find a good water filter. You can choose from many options available. Just make sure the unit you buy meets your requirements.
