How to Make the Most of Small Backyard Space
Even a small backyard can be a great addition to your property. Figuring out what to do with it can be tougher than it is with a larger space, but it’s not impossible. Below are a handful of things you can do to get the most out of your smaller yard.
Use it All
One of the biggest mistakes that people make with smaller yard is a failure to use all of their space. Don’t mark certain areas out of bound—every inch of the space really should be used whenever possible. Get to know where your property lines are and don’t be afraid to fill up your space from one end to the other when necessary. The more you’re willing to use the space, the more that you will get out of it.

Don’t Overdo It
With that said, it’s a really good idea to eliminate clutter whenever you can. Think of your smaller yard as a small room—the more open space that you have, the bigger it will feel. Though you can’t do much about the dimensions of your yard, you can make it feel bigger by keeping up with the landscaping, choosing the right furniture, and ensuring that space is tidy.

Get the Right Outdoor Furniture
It’s important that your outdoor furniture doesn’t overwhelm your space. Eschew bulkier items for wicker furniture and try to find items that serve a purpose but that won’t take up much extra space. Consider every inch that you can save to be a small victory, especially if you’re looking to fit in more items to a smaller area. Go small when you can so that you are able to save the space for those items that don’t come in smaller sizes.

Look at Multipurpose Items
Finally, try to look for items to add to your yard that can serve more than one purpose. Any single-use piece of decor is either going to have to be moved out of the way or ignored whenever it’s not in use, so make sure that you’re able to justify why you have those items in your yard. Double-duty items don’t need to be moved as often and can make a great addition to your yard.
Even a small yard is better than no yard at all. Make sure you pay attention to what’s in the space and that you use every square foot to its fullest potential. If you’re careful, your small yard can still be a great space.
