Making your very own jewelry at home is a great way to let your creativity soar, and it can even be a way for you to make some extra money if you have people interested in purchasing your unique creations. But if you’re going to get into the jewelry-making hobby and take it seriously, there are some safety tips that you need to take into consideration. Continue reading to learn more about what you need to do to keep yourself injury free.

If You’re Going to Weld, Get the Right Safety Gear

Welding can be done at home, and it can be done safely, but you need to invest in the right welding safety gear in order to protect yourself. The radiation that’s created by the welding process can be harmful to your eyes, and the sparks that are made can burn your skin and even get stuck in the cuffs of your clothes. Therefore, you should cover up completely whenever you weld for a jewelry project, and also invest in a welding mask that will protect your face and eyes.

Wear a Dust Mask Whenever Necessary

Another step that you can take to protect yourself while making jewelry is simply wearing a dust mask whenever it’s necessary to do so, particularly when you’re doing any drilling, buffing, or sanding. Depending upon the type of dust that’s created, you should be able to find the most effective mask that will prevent you from inhaling the irritants.

To protect yourself while drilling glass, shells, pearls, and similar objects, moisten them and make sure they remain wet, or drill them while they’re in a small tray filled with water. The dust created by these objects can be really dangerous to the lungs, but the water will serve to keep the dust down while also keeping the materials cool. Just be sure the drilling tool that you’re using won’t electrocute you when in contact with water.

Tie Your Hair Back and Roll Up Your Sleeves

If you have long hair, you should tie it back whenever you’re working on your jewelry because it could otherwise get caught in your tools and get ripped out or tangled in a really painful way.

You should also avoid having flowing, long sleeves. Roll them up or wear sleeves that are tight against your arms and don’t flow down. This will prevent your sleeve from getting caught, pulled, and ruined, and it could also prevent injuries.

Also, never wear dangling or long jewelry while you work because these, too, can become caught and cause strangulation.
