As an international student packing for your journey abroad can prove to be quite a hassle with trying to balance what to take along and what to leave behind. Like I am aware that I can’t afford to over-pack but neither can I miss out on my essentials and pack too little, believe me when I say that I have learned it the hard way. So, allow me to shed my wisdom of experience on all the international students out there who are currently sitting in front of their suitcases trying to figure it out with their luggage so that they don’t make the same mistakes that I made. So, here’s a well thought and well-curated list to help you pack all your uni essentials.
Mindful Selection of Essentials
When selecting what to pack for your trip to the UK, concentrate on things that have several uses. Choose adaptable clothing items so you can mix and match them into different OOTDs saving both space in your suitcase and time in decision-making. Avoid packing too many clothes or clunky outfits as they are available for purchase at affordable prices in the UK too.
Tech and Gadgets
While packing your phone, laptop, and chargers among the other tech stuff make sure your devices are charged and ready to go. Also, check if the place you are staying at has any specific needs for adapters or converters in case the plugs are different from the ones back home. A plug extension can also be handy if your new home lacks enough plugs to fulfill your need.
Personal Comfort
Your new home can feel more like home with the addition of personal items like a favorite pillow or blanket, family photos, or a tiny keepsake to give you a sense of comfort during the initial days of adjustment periods.
Toiletries and Health Essentials
You have easy access to toiletries in the UK but it can be useful to carry a small supply to start a routine from. Remember to pack prescription medicines if any and if possible, use travel-sized toiletries to save space.
Weather Ready Wardrobe
Always be prepared for rain or shine because the UK weather is unpredictable. Bring layers that are simple to put on and take off as the weather changes, a small umbrella, and a waterproof jacket can be a few of the most
Kitchen Essentials
Having a proper kitchen setup can significantly improve your daily routine as you start your journey. You need to pack basic utensils like forks, knives, and spoons for all types of meals. A microwave-safe bowl and mug will be your go-to for quick snacking and reheating leftovers. Get yourself a small chopping board and a good knife for smoother meal preps. To enhance your cooking options consider packing a small saucepan and frying pan, with a spatula and ladle to help with the mixing of ingredients. Keep yourself hydrated by packing a travel-friendly mug.
Documents
Pack your documents before packing anything else. Make sure you have all your documents in a handy compartment in your luggage whether it is your travel documents or your CAS certificate, it is also advisable to carry photocopies for the same, just in case.
When I say pack light it doesn’t necessarily mean to sacrifice your comfort or style. You will have more room for special moments and deep friendships if you carefully choose your uni essentials. Keep in mind that a new journey is all about learning, growing, and living big in all senses of the world as you set off on your UK adventure.
