Top 10 Patio Plants for Autumn 2020

With Summer on its way out, it is only a few weeks until the leaves on the trees start to change colours on your evening drive home. For those of us who embrace the chillier mornings decorated with delicate snowflakes, and the prospect of a white Christmas with a hot cup of cocoa – this is great news! For the rest of you who long for the longer days and shorter nights with lazy summer days, this clearly is not the best news you will get today…

Something I am sure we can all agree on, however, is the loveliness of having blooming flowers livening up your patio. Patio boxes are not just for growing veg, surprise, surprise! Plants that are mostly enjoyed aesthetically also deserve a place amongst your various planters. We have compiled a list of our top 10 favourites plants for Autumn, from pure greenery to colour delights during the upcoming change of season. So, without further ado, let us get started with our favourite plants to add to our stunning planters from Outdoor Art Pros.

1. Veronica

This bee-friendly beauty is a good source of nectar for our fuzzy buzzy friends and looks just darling in a planter on the patio. Veronica is a tough ornamental plant which means it is very low maintenance as well as easy on the eyes.

2. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus has a wonderful menthol aroma and requires very little upkeep aside from a bit of water and lots of sun. The leaves are filled with tannins so helps ease breathing too – gorgeous, and functional!

3. Sempervivums

These stunning little evergreens enable your patio to have year-round greenery. Take your pick from the many lovely varieties or mix and match – it is entirely up to you.

4. Button Flowers

Button flowers may look like miniature versions of carnations, but they are so much easier to grow. These bountiful beauties are double annuals and do have a propensity to self-seed so just keep that in mind when planting these little lovelies.

5. Verbena

My all-time favourite, Verbenas are prolific bloomers with a very long bloom period and a high tolerance to cooler temperatures. It does not hurt that they look so cute in a neutral planter.

6. Ornamental Cabbages

Delightfully chubby and cheerful, these round stunners will take your patio into Autumn in style. With the loveliest colour blends of darker greens and purples, these colours only intensify with colder temperatures.

7. Asters

No autumn patio would be complete without Asters. The indigo or blue flowers are quintessential autumn plants, but these are best suited to large planters.

8. Pansies

Pansies are the classic, timeless pops of colour that we have all come to know and love. These cool-weather annuals usually make their appearance in early Spring, but they can be planted again for autumn.

9. Coneflowers (Echinacea)

Perhaps most known for their wonderful health benefits, the various forms of this sweet perennial bloom in the late Summer and last until late Autumn. If covered and sheltered they can make it through the Winter too.

10. Sedum

Sedum is a large genus of flowering succulent plants that are commonly known as stonecrops. Sedum plant very easily and are well-known for their distinctive fleshy foliage. Although they do enjoy full sun, they can also tolerate shade and would look superb in the corner of a patio.

Armed with this knowledge, go forth and pretty up your patios for Autumn!
