New technology gets everybody excited. The hot new thing that everyone obsesses over for a little bit before it hits the back of the garage to gather dust, along with whatever you got from loved ones over the last holiday season. With so many new gadgets coming out, it can be difficult to know what is hot and what is not, so we’ll take a look at the ones making the biggest waves.
We’ll start with one of the most eye-catching stories around tech that is potentially grabbing so much attention just because of the novelty. In Japan, a place called Henn Na, or ‘weird hotel’ is a world first to be staffed entirely by robots. There is even a dinosaur there waiting for you at the reception. Whether this trend is picked up by more than just a few remains to be seen. It might be a little more difficult to complain to a dinosaur if your bed isn’t quite right however.
One of the biggest questions on many lips is about wearables. Following the undeniable hype surrounding the release of the Apple Watch, rather than disappearing from wrists after the novelty period has worn off, these bits of tech bling are seeming more and more frequent, with the link between wearables, tablets and smartphone technology becoming increasingly defined. There are obviously set to be a wide array of competitors looking to break in to this emerging market, and it will be interesting to see who the serious players are.
As for what some of the big tech companies are aiming to bring to the table, attention will inevitably continue to circle around Google and its ambition to deliver driverless cars, which will excite everyone who lives miles away from their nearest watering hole and certainly reduce the proliferation of drink-driving.
IBM is also investing heavily in its artificial intelligence demonstrations, as their cognitive computers move into the world of medicine. It has long been expected that once ready and available, these incredible machines would be able to offer a great deal to medical science, which can help add precision to professions in radiology and cardiology.
Another medical marvel in terms of emerging technology is definitely around 3D bioprinting. When 3D printing came onto the scene the interest was mainly on printing cheaper, durable materials to defined specifications. Now though, it is possible to print off living tissue, and it is expected that entire human organs will be able to be produced using this method in the near future, with the chance of these bioprinted organs being suitable for transplants thought to be just around the corner. This is definitely something to keep your eye on.
The biggest wave of the year from an entertainment perspective is unlikely to be around future medical devices though, and 2016 is almost certain to be the year that virtual reality finally breaks through and into the mainstream. With Google Cardboard offering a little taster of the good things to come late last year, offering a simple cardboard headset that when accompanied with tailored apps, allows for virtual viewing.
The highly anticipated Oculus Rift is expected to be released in some form to the public later this year, and for sure if it is a user-friendly experience you can expect it to be high on the wish list of all tech lovers, as it brings a staple of science fiction gaming to life.
If the gaming platforms are released to match the level of technology that these VR headsets will provide, it is guaranteed to be one of the most sought after devices of the year.
One of 2015s tech trends that is still carrying on is of course the fake hoverboard, with more of these seeming to be in existence everywhere you look, and as fake hoverboards continue to be seized by customs officials it shows why it is important to get the must-haves from the brands you can trust to deliver a quality product. Though these exciting bits of kits have definitely made it as a craze, it remains to be seen how much longevity these gadgets will have once everyone has had a chance to check them out. 2016 is still young, yet already it seems like there will be so much to get us excited about over the course of the year. With so many developments already scheduled for release, it will be interesting to see which companies emerge as the real winners.
