The biggest home in every US state

Homes in the USA are getting bigger. In fact, they’re getting much bigger! The average size of residential property in the USA is now three times larger than it was back in the 1950s. That’s a whopping increase from 797 square feet per home to 2,491 square feet. Residents in the USA now have the most floor space per person on the entire planet.

This move toward living big inspired home advice expert Angi to create a list of the largest family homes in every US state.  Angi’s designers then created a digital mock-up of all these monster mansions, sprawling beach houses, and contemporary châteaus

The list includes iconic residential buildings like the New York Fair Field mansion. Located on the Hamptons waterfront, Far Field belongs to John Alfred Paulson, one of Wall Streets’ leading financiers and hedge fund managers. The 110,000 square-foot property boasts 29 bedrooms, 39 bathrooms, a basketball court, a synagogue, and even a bowling alley.

Most people would say that the White House is Washington’s biggest residential property. But they’d be wrong. That title belongs to Xanadu 2.0, the colossal lakeside estate built by Bill and Melinda Gates in 1995. The 66,000 square-foot Pacific-style lodge is significantly larger than the home of the sitting US President.

Xanadu 2.0 is worth an estimated $127million. It’s furnished with several high-tech luxury features, including a hidden speaker system that plays your favourite music as you move from room to room. Digital screens placed all around the home display your favourite artwork or iconic photos at the touch of a button.

South Dakota has the ‘smallest big home’ in the USA. The mini-mansion at 812 E in the Tuthill suburb of Sioux Falls spans a measly 11,734 square feet. It has ‘just’ four bedrooms and ‘only’ eight bathrooms. But it does come with a private exercise room.

Montana’s Shelter Island Estate is probably the most imposing-looking mansion in the USA. The towering gothic-inspired super-home looms over its own private island on Flathead Lake.

This five-bedroom property covers 24,000 square feet, with 10,000 square feet of heated porticos and a vast outdoor entertaining space that includes a forest, shooting range, and a rail system to transport boats from the stall to the house.

The spires of Shelter Island offer breathtaking vistas of the Rocky Mountains and the icy peaks of Glacier National Park. Shelter Island Estate is a truly epic home combining millionaire luxury living with the rugged spirit of America’s early frontier days.

The biggest residential property in Massachusetts isn’t a mansion; it’s a castle fit for any king, queen, or prince. Commissioned and built by interior architectural designer Edward Francis Searles, Searles Castle has operated as a tourist attraction, event space for classical music concerts, and wedding venue for the rich and famous. Today, Searles Castle is the primary residence of a billionaire pharmaceutical company owner.
