How to Keep a Home Redesign Cheap

Redesigning or redecorating your home can be an expensive endeavour, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many ways to keep a home redesign cheap. Here are the top ways to redecorate and redesign your home within your budget.

Set your budget

The first thing you need to do when embarking on a redesign project is to set a budget. Of course, if you’re renovating to the extreme (doing anything at all to the structure of your house) there are always going to be unforeseen issues that need to be addressed so it’s good to include a little additional wiggle room when setting out your budget. First, list all of the things you’ll be including in your redesign (new cabinetry, furniture, home décor, etc.) and give a budget to each category (including each rooms total budget) and then also include an emergency fund for any unforeseen issues that need to be addressed. Don’t expect your redesign to be perfectly aligned to your budget but you still need one.

Upcycle and repurpose existing design

When wanting a home redesign for cheap, you’ll need to carefully consider what pieces in your home are too practical to get rid of and which items you still love. Give practical items like an old desk, cupboard or cabinets a makeover by painting in a new colour or reupholstering your old shabby chair. Upcycling your stuff is not only good for the environment but also good for your back pocket.

Sell, sell, sell

When sticking to a budget, you may want to consider selling your now unwanted items. You can sell furniture, home décor and even floor offcuts and other bits and pieces. Don’t expect a lot but this is a good way to get rid of your old bulky items without needing to hire a skip and make a bit of extra money to put to your redesign budget.

Buy second-hand

Much like selling your old goods to savvy shoppers, you should scour the second-hand stores for good quality used furniture items and home décor. It’s a great way to score a bargain and if you find something you love but it isn’t quite perfect you can always give it a little makeover. For example, have your eye on a dining table that’s has a dark stain? Sand it down and give it a little TLC with a new lighter stain. You’ll have the perfect table at a fraction of the cost of buying new.

Keep it simple

Instead of a total home redesign, if you’re on a tight budget and can’t afford to go all out, then you might find that doing a light and simple change to your home works almost as well. Use home décor and accessories to bring new life to your old furniture, add a new rug for a totally new look or move around the furniture for a more feng shui layout. A new coat of paint might be all a room needs to brighten it up.
