When travelling abroad you always have to think about what you should pack. This isn’t that difficult when you are going to a country that’s near but there are a lot of things to take into consideration when travelling to a different climate. You need to do your research about the weather, what is considered appropriate and (if you really don’t want to look like a tourist) what’s in style.
Weather
Do not be fooled, the weather can be fickle in Australia since the main cities are on the open ocean, in the months of January, February, March, April and May the days can get pretty hot and then cold in the evenings especially after thunderstorms. In June and July the temperature tends to drop in the coastal cities. August and September are fickle as well; you can have hot and cold days. In October and November things start to heat up as well but there are rainy days that tend to last long. In December it’s summer but even though there is rain it’s not cold. Your best bet is to look up the weather forecast that is expected during you stay and the average temperatures. El Niño is one of the reasons for Australia’s oscillating weather patterns bringing heat and rain at the same time.
How to dress
Australians tend to dress casually so just pack what you feel most comfortable in. Since it is hot in Sydney during the summer months wear light clothes that you can mix and combine. You should pack causal loose fitting T-shirts, jeans, shorts and skirts. Make sure you pack something for those cold periods a jacket is a good choice, preferably water-proof. Some restaurant and clubs have a dress code so bring a couple of dressy outfit in case you want to hit the town. As far as shoes go pick comfortable shoes, thongs, dressy shoes for going out and try to bring at least one pair of closed toe shoes.
Shopping
If you miss out on warnings about Australian weather you can always buy some clothes there. Hit the shops and find those pieces you missed while packing. A good idea is to look at dresses online to figure out what you would want and maybe even shop online if you have enough time to wait for the delivery.

Protection
The Sun is unforgivable in Australia during the summer so it is essential to protect your skin against the damaging sunrays. Wear light protective clothing to cover up your skin as much as you can. A sunblock with a high SPF is a must have, even keep a small portable sunblock with you at all times. Even if you used a sunblock you should take care of your skin post-sun exposure. Always take a shower after being in water because salt and chloride dry the skin. Keep your skin moisturised by drinking plenty of water and applying moisturiser every night.
