3 Home Projects to Help You Feel Productive This Summer

For most people, summer is a time for relaxation and fun. For others, it’s a great opportunity to get some things done. The weather is warmer, the kids are home to help, and it’s just a good time to take care of those jobs you’ve been needing to do. As it warms up this summer, think about these three projects that will add some productivity to your recreation this summer.

Check the Condition of Your Roof

The roof of your home is its most important protection against the elements. Hail, wind, foot traffic, and the passage of time can damage your roof and lead to costly, destructive leaks. Visit your attic this summer and see if there are any indications of water finding its way in, and while you’re at it, consider adding some insulation to lower energy costs. Shingled roofs can be fairly easy to patch, but metal roof repair should be done by a qualified contractor.

Paint Exposed Wood

When we think of building materials, we generally think of vinyl, aluminum, concrete, and other very durable materials. With so many manufactured materials on homes these days, it’s easy to forget there is still quite a bit of wood out in the elements. Door facings, decks, handrails, and certain windows still include wooden components that, even if pressure-treated, can degrade over time. A good coat of quality paint will protect the wood for several years, giving you one less thing to worry about this winter.

Create an Outdoor Room

Not every project has to be maintenance. Sometimes you can get into something that is fun to make and fun to use, and an outdoor room fits the bill perfectly. Rather than going to the expense and trouble of adding a deck or porch, you can get the same effect with a fire pit, some well-placed paver stones, and a set of patio furniture. In most parts of the country, an outdoor room can be used in all but a few months of the year. You can even upgrade it to include a kitchen, television, and more, giving you more projects to do in future summers.

Summer is a great time to be outdoors and have fun, but it’s also a great time to get things done before winter. These home projects will make you feel more productive this summer and help you enjoy time with your family.
